You tell us what you want; we take care of the rest.

Step by Step Import Process

There are two primary routes for importing a car from the UK to Cyprus. The correct route depends on whether you are a commercial buyer taking advantage of VAT qualifying status, or an individual relocating permanently to Cyprus.

Option A — VAT Qualifying Vehicle (Recommended for Most Buyers)

This is the most popular route for buyers who are not relocating but simply want to purchase a quality UK car and bring it to Cyprus. Buying a VAT-qualifying vehicle means you purchase the car from the UK without paying UK VAT (20%), then pay only Cypriot VAT (19%) at the point of import — avoiding any risk of double taxation.

Step 1: Consultation — Contact us to discuss your requirements, budget, and ideal specification. We identify suitable VAT-qualifying vehicles and present options.

Step 2: Vehicle Purchase — We source and secure the vehicle on your behalf. As a VAT-qualifying export, UK VAT is removed from the sale price, giving you a lower purchase price.

Step 3: Export Documentation — We prepare your V5C logbook, export certificate, and proof of origin documentation. UK-origin vehicles qualify for 0% import duty into Cyprus under the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement.

Step 4: Shipping to Cyprus — Your vehicle is shipped via Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) or container service to Limassol port. Transit time is typically 10–21 days depending on the service selected.

Step 5: Cyprus Customs Clearance — Your appointed customs agent in Cyprus presents the vehicle and documentation at Limassol. Cyprus VAT at 19% is calculated on the combined vehicle value, shipping cost, and any applicable duty, then collected before release.

Step 6: Registration with the RTD — You register the vehicle with the Cyprus Road Transport Department (RTD). This includes a roadworthiness inspection (approx. €40) and registration fee (approx. €150). Annual circulation tax is then applied based on CO2 emissions and fuel type.

Option B — Transfer of Residence Exemption

If you are permanently relocating from the UK to Cyprus, you may be eligible to import one vehicle duty-free and VAT-free under the Transfer of Residence exemption. This relief comes with strict conditions and must be arranged before or shortly after your move.

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility — You must have owned and used the vehicle in the UK for a minimum of six months prior to relocation, and you must import it within 12 months of transferring your permanent residence to Cyprus.

Step 2: Gather Supporting Documentation — Prepare evidence of UK residency (utility bills, tax returns), Cyprus residency (property contracts, employment), vehicle purchase records, and proof the vehicle is in free circulation in the UK.

Step 3: Arrange Shipping — Ship the vehicle to Limassol as above. Retain all shipping documentation as this is required for the customs exemption claim.

Step 4: Apply at Cyprus Customs — Your customs agent presents the exemption claim at Limassol. You vehicle must be imported within 12 months of your move. If approved, the vehicle is released without payment of import duty or VAT.

Step 5: Register and Note Restrictions — Register with the RTD as normal. Note: the vehicle can be any age. It cannot be sold, lent, pledged, or transferred to another party for three years following import under this exemption.

Choosing the correct import route

The table below summarises the key differences to help you determine which route applies to your situation.

Option A — VAT Qualifying Vehicle Option B — Transfer of Residence
Best for buyers purchasing from the UK market Best for those permanently relocating to Cyprus
0% UK VAT on purchase (ex-VAT price) Duty and VAT potentially waived
19% Cyprus VAT payable on import Must have owned vehicle 6+ months in UK
No age restriction (subject to type approval) Must import within 12 months of relocation
Vehicle can be any mileage / age Ownership cannot be transferred for 3 years

Transport and Shipping Options

There are two main methods for shipping a vehicle from the UK to Cyprus. Both services arrive at Limassol — the primary commercial port for vehicle imports into Cyprus. Larnaca may also be used for certain shipments.

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)

RoRo is the most cost-effective shipping method. Your vehicle is driven onto the vessel at the UK port and driven off at Limassol. Services typically depart from Southampton or Bristol, with transit times of 10–14 days. This is the most popular option for standard vehicles in good running condition.

Note: Electric and hybrid vehicles may be shipped RoRo, however will be required to undergo an EV check prior to shipment (£250).

Personal effects may not travel in the car.

Container Shipping

Container shipping offers greater security and protection for higher-value or classic vehicles. Your car is loaded into a shared or dedicated container at a UK depot (weekly sailings from London). Transit time is 14–21 days to Limassol. Containers can also accommodate personal effects alongside the vehicle, subject to customs regulations.

Key shipping considerations include:

• Vehicles must be cleaned and free of soil/organic material before arrival — Cyprus customs enforce strict biosecurity requirements.

• Personal items left in the vehicle during shipping may attract additional duties at customs.

• Comprehensive shipping insurance is strongly recommended for all vehicles.

• Port handling and customs clearance fees at Limassol are typically €390–€520 depending on vehicle size and service type.

VAT

"Buying a VAT-qualifying vehicle from us means you pay VAT once — in Cyprus at 19% — rather than potentially absorbing irrecoverable UK VAT into your purchase price."

Cyprus applies VAT at a rate of 19% on imported vehicles. VAT is calculated on the combined value of the vehicle purchase price, shipping costs, and any applicable import duty — this combined figure is known as the customs value.

The VAT Qualifying Car advantage: when you purchase a VAT-qualifying vehicle from us, UK VAT (20%) is removed from the sale price. You pay no UK VAT on purchase.

When your vehicle arrives in Cyprus, you pay 19% Cypriot VAT on the customs value. This ensures you are only taxed once — in Cyprus — rather than paying UK VAT upfront that cannot be reclaimed as a private individual.

Import Duty

The import duty rate applied to your vehicle depends on its country of origin — where it was manufactured, not where it was registered.

UK-origin vehicles (manufactured in the UK): 0% import duty under the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). A valid Certificate of Origin or manufacturer proof of origin is required.

Non-UK origin passenger cars (e.g., manufactured in Japan, Germany, or the USA but registered in the UK): 10% import duty applies, calculated on the customs value.

Commercial vehicles: duty rates of 10%–22% depending on vehicle type and engine size.

• Motorcycles: 8% (up to 250cc) or 6% (over 250cc).

For most modern vehicles sourced from the UK, it is important to verify the country of manufacture before assuming 0% duty applies. Japanese-manufactured vehicles — such as many Toyota, Honda, and Nissan models — do not qualify for TCA zero-duty treatment and will attract 10% duty. We advise on origin status for every vehicle we source.

Note: Import duty rates, VAT percentages, registration fees, and exemption conditions are correct at time of writing but are subject to change. Always verify current rates with your Cyprus customs agent before committing to a purchase.

Vehicle Registration in Cyprus

All imported vehicles must be registered with the Cyprus Road Transport Department (RTD) before they can be used on Cypriot roads. The registration process involves the following:

• Roadworthiness inspection (MOT equivalent): approximately €40.

• Registration documentation fee: approximately €150.

• Total registration cost: approximately €190 for a standard passenger car.

• CO2 emissions certificate: required — this information is found on Point V.7 of the UK V5C logbook.

• Type Approval Number: required — found at Point K on the UK V5C logbook.

Age restrictions: standard imported vehicles must generally be under five years old to be registered in Cyprus. Vehicles imported under a Transfer of Residence exemption are not subject to this age restriction. Classic or vintage vehicles (25+ years old) may qualify for special classification, subject to FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) certification.

Annual Circulation Tax is payable once the vehicle is registered. Rates vary by fuel type, CO2 emissions band, and vehicle age. As Cyprus aligns its tax structure with EU environmental policy, lower-emission vehicles typically attract more favourable rates.

Temporary importation is also possible for periods of up to six months using the vehicle's original UK registration. A Cyprus-issued insurance policy from a locally registered provider is required for the duration.
